History

Where it all began…

In 1986, our President and Founder, Salmonberry attended Outdoor School at Camp Howard and a future camp director was born. From that dream to present day, read more about how Shooting Star Adventures came to be.

2016 – OHDAKA

Having served as senior staff for camp programs with Outdoor School, Campfire and Girl Scouts, Salmonberry and Butterfly combine forces to coordinate a Girl Scout day camp in Welches, Oregon. Ohdaka brings an overnight training component for youth leaders to the traditional day camp format. By turning their focus toward developing the leadership capabilities of their young teen leaders, a camp family is born, quirky traditions and all. Campers thrive under the strengthened leadership model as teen leaders take on more and more of a leadership role at camp.

2018 – Camp Two Roads

After 3 successful summers of day camp, Butterfly and Salmonberry decide to grow their own leadership potential by developing an overnight camp program. They partner with a local non-profit to provide guidance as they develop this new adventure. In the fall, Camp Two Roads is born based on the principle of taking the road less travelled rather than just blindly following the path that others have already created.

2019 – Curves in the Road

Camp Two Roads welcomes it’s first campers at Canyonville Camp in Silverton, Oregon. The learning curves are big, but in the end a successful week is had by all – even with thunderstorms and strange tree allergies that left us all reaching for the kleenex.

2020 – Shooting Star Adventures

Excited to build upon the success of the first summer of C2R, Salmonberry and Butterfly once again learn to pivot when COVID-19 threatens to shut down all plans. They work non stop to advocate for the community they have built, knowing that the campers need summer camp now more than ever. Fortunately the hard work pays off and they successfully serve the community as a day camp at the Molalla Retreat Center.

At the end of the second summer of Camp Two Roads and in the midst of a worldwide pandemic, it becomes clear that one week of summer camp is not enough to support this growing community and all the other underserved communities that would benefit from connecting to nature. Shooting Star Adventures, Inc., a nonprofit designed to meet this growing need is formed in September.

2021 – New Adventures Abound

We kicked off the new year with a series of monthly hikes aimed to educate the community about the natural world right in their own town.

Camp families were invited to a Mom and Me weekend in the spring to get to know C2R and we rocked out with more than 60 participants over the course of the weekend.

This past summer we added 2 co-ed day camps into our familiy of programming. Campers gained practical knowledge in wilderness skills and naturalist concepts while having a ton of fun close to their own neighborhoods.

Camp Two Roads welcomed more than 90 campers to a week full of traditional overnight camp fun focused on young women empowerment. We saw girls reaching beyond their boundaries to build confidence in their abilities and beautiful camp familiy was formed.

2022 – Full Stream Ahead

Girls Weekend kicked off our camp programming with a roar – as moms and their daughters zipped and canoed across the pond, navigated treetop challenges and spent time making memories together. Of course the totally tubular 80’s dance party was a huge hit.

This year day camps were all hands on deck and full steam ahead. The program expanded to 5 full weeks of adventures based at Glenn Otto park in Troutdale and Donald Robertson Park in Wood Village. Our new Nature Art and Engineering camp inspired creativity with fun challenges and crafts. But the highlight of the program was our Mini-Stars sessions designed for our very youngest adventures. Over all we served more than 50 families and 100 campers.

Camp Two Roads hit capacity in early summer and we were excited to welcome 120 campers to our signature overnight camp. Each night after dinner campers would spill out of the dining hall and enjoy an hour to choose their own adventures – whether you chose line dancing, gagaball or simply chilling on the deck with new friends, this nightly routine was a great way to unwind after a busy day at camp. It quickly became a favorite time of the day for staff and campers alike.

2023 – Milestones Reached

We continued to seek out opportunities for people to come together in nature and build community.

The weather held out for a fabulous girls weekend in April.

In order to better serve our day camp families, we merged Mini Stars and our skills day camp so that siblings can attend together. We offered 2 amazing weeks of day camp at Blue Lake Regional Park.

Camp Two Roads celebrated its 5th summer in operation. Campers and staff were seen sportig fun anniversary themed merch as well as a few classic throwbacks.

2024 – A Banner Year

2024 was a banner year for our organization. We were awarded several grants for programing as well as being recognized as the beneficiary to the Gresham Lilac Run. These blessings allowed us to purchase equipment for our brand new fishing program, provide a free bus service to day camp and grant several scholarships for families.

Ohdaka and Camp Two Roads had record numbers of registrations and our camp heart were overflowing to serve so many families this past summer.

2025 – The next five years

This year marks our 5th anniversary as a non-profit, and we’re celebrating in style! Exciting events like My Girl and Me, Ohdaka, and Camp Two Roads are already on the calendar. We’re also planning new adventures, including a C2R Family Fun Day, a Weekend Backpacking Adventure, and more. Stay tuned for details on how you can join the fun!
